What’s your latest “new swing thing that you’ve abandoned already?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who tries new swing thoughts or “whatever”. I think the search for the magic swing is endless.

I tried the “Mike Austin” swing for two rounds last week, after one trip at the range that was semi successful. But it just didn't transfer to the course.

So I went back to the “old” swing and shot well.

I'm beginning to think the “old” swing still has components of all the weird things I try as the years roll by. I think the “good” parts must stick...

But the Mike Austin swing had a pretty serious wrist roll at contact that created nice distance. When it all came together at the correct time. But it was hard to get it all there at the “correct” time.

So for that reason, it's out...

I saw your original post about this but was traveling and didn't comment.

It takes a year or more for a touring pro to make a swing change. That's hitting 100's of balls every day, using video, etc., etc. There will always be steps back, perhaps significant ones, before improvement occurs. Why would anyone in our age bracket that already plays fairly well want to do that?

Additionally I would be suspicious of any swing that involves smaller muscles such as wrists. These follow the larger muscles not vis a versa.

Find a teacher that takes what you have and tweaks rather than reworks. Reworking is for younger guys not for someone over 50 unless he/she has tons of time, patience and a serious swing flaw to start with.

I take lessons, one a year to review my fundamentals like set up, grip, lines, etc. and then as needed if an issue creeps in.

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

The point was, that I think many people are constantly tweaking their swing, trying to find “it”.

But usually, it isn't.

I certainly agree particularly if “it” isn't coming from a lesson by a teacher who knows the player.

I agree because I've made the mistake of thinking that this or that tip was “it” often in my life. Way too often. :)

I gave up on “looking” like a tour pro swing model. And went back to swinging like “weekend warrior” hacker swing model.Game really became enjoyable again late season. Most of us are just recreational golfers anyway.Just accept it and enjoy the company and scenery

Keep it in the short stuff

I have 3 I abandoned.

1. I had a habit of always trying to fix my swing with every shot on the course. I would always try to adjust to fix where I messed up on the last swing

2. I abandoned always changing my grip. I'd constantly change my grip thinking that was it.

3. I gave up on the idea of setting up for drives with backwards leaning shaft. I previously had a slightly forward leaning shaft and was told that was bad, so I changed it. It robbed all my distance and brought back my fades and slices. I abandoned the idea and went back to a slightly forward leaning shaft for my driver.

I've been blocking my driver right recently, mostly because I kept "trying to stay behind the ball," and playing from the other fairway was annoying me. Worked on keeping the clubface closed for longer on my takeaway and just started pumping balls to the end of the range. Felt so good to see them going straight or cutting 2-5 yards.

I'm also playing with the loft on my driver. Felt like 10.5 was too high, 9.5 is still pretty high but without a launch monitor I can't be certain. Have to see how it goes during my round on Saturday.
